Although you might not be able to afford a $130,000 luxury, all-electric Tesla Model S speedster, you could come up with $90 to rent one for an hour.
That’s what Ryan Silverthorn is betting on by launching Power Trips, the Okanagan’s first and only Tesla rental agency.
“This is definitely a niche, but I saw a gap in the market for people who want to experience the power and luxury of a Tesla,” said Silverthorn. “It’s such a fun and different car to drive. Because it’s all-electric, it’s environmentally friendly and noiseless except for road noise. Yet, it can go from zero to 100 km/h in just four seconds.”
While Silverthorn is based in Vernon, he’ll deliver the car to anyone who wants to rent it from Salmon Arm to Penticton. If an hour isn’t long enough, the 12-hour rental is $325 and multi-day leases are also available.
“I expect a lot of locals will want to rent, just for the thrill of it,” said Silverthorn, “and there will also be tourists from Vancouver and Alberta.”
For now, Power Trips only has a sleek, black Model S sedan, but a Tesla SUV is on order and will be arriving soon.
Silverthorn has already partnered with Kelowna’s Current Taxi, which has two Teslas, to transport customers to Power Trips cars if Silverthorn is unable to deliver them due to quick turnarounds.
Silverthorn was previously head pro at Predator Ridge Golf Resort and saw numerous Tesla test-drive events at the resort go well. It led him set up Power Trips and give up his career in golf to operate the Tesla rental business full-time.
